The change-of-address checklist
Everyone who needs your new address, in order.
Mail forwarding helps for a while, but you'll want everyone who matters to have your new address directly.
Start with
- USPS change of address (online at the official USPS site, which charges a small identity verification fee; beware look-alike sites that charge more)
- Your employer and payroll
- Banks, credit cards and loan servicers
- Insurance: auto, home or renters, health and life
Government
- IRS (Form 8822, or it updates when you file with the new address)
- Social Security, if you receive benefits
- Your state DMV for license and registration; many states set a deadline after you move
- Voter registration
Everything else
- Doctors, dentists and pharmacies
- Schools
- Subscriptions and online shopping accounts
- Retirement and investment accounts
- Professional licenses and memberships
