Your first week in a new home
Safety, security and the small jobs that make a new place work.
Before the boxes are all unpacked, a few jobs make the new home safe and help you avoid surprises later.
Safety and security
- Change or rekey the exterior locks (if you own the home; renters should ask the landlord)
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
- Find the main water shutoff, electrical panel and gas shutoff
- Check that windows lock
Paperwork
- Inspect for moving damage and file claims promptly
- Note any existing damage in a rental and send it to the landlord with photos
- Start a home records folder
Getting to know the area
- Find the nearest urgent care and pharmacy
- Learn the trash and recycling schedule
- Register children for school if needed
