Transferring utilities without a gap

When to call, what to ask, and how to avoid paying for two homes.

4 min read

Schedule utilities about two to four weeks before you move, so the old home switches off the day after you leave and the new one is on the day you arrive.

Utilities to arrange

  • Electricity and gas
  • Water, sewer and trash (often through the city)
  • Internet and phone
  • Security system, if you have one

Tips

  • Take photos of meter readings on move-out day
  • Ask about deposits and how to get them back
  • Ask the landlord or seller which providers serve the address
  • Book internet installation early; it's often the slowest
