Moving guides / Plan
DIY, full-service movers or a container?
How the three main ways to move compare on cost, time and effort.
There's no single right way to move. The best choice depends on how far you're going, how much you have, your budget and your physical ability.
Full-service movers
- They load, transport and unload; packing is optional
- Highest cost, least physical work
- Best for long distances, large homes and heavy furniture
Rental truck (DIY)
- Usually the cheapest for local moves
- You do all the lifting and driving; budget for fuel and helpers
- Consider hiring loading help by the hour
Moving container
- A container is dropped off; you pack it, the company drives it
- Flexible timing and storage built in
- Check whether your street or building allows a container
Questions to decide
- How far is the move, and is it across state lines?
- How many rooms of furniture are there?
- Who can lift heavy items safely?
- How much flexibility do you have on dates?
