How to build a moving budget

The costs people forget, and how to estimate each one.

5 min read

The mover's estimate is only part of the cost of moving. Deposits, supplies, travel and setting up the new home add up quickly.

Moving costs

  • Movers, truck rental or container
  • Fuel, tolls and mileage for a truck
  • Packing supplies
  • Valuation coverage beyond the basic level
  • Tips for the crew (optional)
  • Storage, if move-out and move-in dates don't line up

Travel and in-between

  • Hotels and meals on the road
  • Pet boarding or travel
  • Time off work

Setting up

  • Security deposits and first month's rent, or closing costs
  • Utility deposits and connection fees
  • New locks, cleaning supplies, curtains and basic tools
  • Vehicle registration and driver's license fees in a new state

Keep a buffer

Set aside 10 to 15 percent extra. Moves rarely go exactly to plan. Keep receipts in your moving folder.
